Abstract

The aim of this theoretical essay is to reflect on the emergence of the perspective of Bem Viver as a possibility for development models in Latin America. To this end, we have developed this theoretical exercise based on the contributions of the decolonial perspective, firstly addressing an understanding of the historical imposition of the notion of progress and, secondly, problematising the constitution and universalisation of development models and, finally, in a third moment, advancing reflections on the emergence of the perspective of Bem Viver as a possibility for development models in Latin America. We understand that the development models that guide ways of life, production and the economy are proving to be increasingly unsustainable due to the risks and consequences for social and environmental existence. The perspective of Bem Viver emerges as a set of experiences and practices originating from traditional Latin American groups and peoples who maintain coexistent relationships between society and nature, as an alternative to development models in Latin America.

Keywords: Bem Viver; decoloniality; development; Latin America; progress.
