Abstract

Agri-food production has undergone several transformations in recent decades, driven both by technological modernisation and changes in consumer preferences. In this scenario, Family Agro-Industrial Systems (FAS) have emerged as an alternative to the dominant food systems, especially those based on ecological agriculture. This article aims to compare the production costs of ecological and non-ecological FAS located in the south-western region of Paraná. The Value Added (VA) method was used to investigate 12 ecological FAS in 2020 and 12 non-ecological SAFs from different food chains in 2021. The results show that ecological FAS have lower total production and intermediate consumption costs than non-ecological ones. In addition, ecological FAS share more of the costs of paying fees, salaries and taxes with other actors in society, contributing to economic movement in other sectors and to regional development processes. Ecological FAS therefore produce raw materials and agro-industrial food in a more sustainable and diversified way, with lower total costs.
