Abstract

Knowing and understanding the spatial productive structure and identifying regional patterns of economic growth is an exercise that allows us to interpret dynamics and thus enrich the debate on local protagonism in decision-making and the adoption of public policies. This article aims to analyse productive specialisation in the North-Northeast region of Santa Catarina based on five influential cities (Canoinhas, Jaraguá do Sul, Mafra, Porto União and Rio Negrinho), using location indicators and regional specialisation by calculating the locational quotient. It is possible to recognise specialisation patterns linked to agricultural activities, followed by service sector and industrial activities, polarised by the municipalities of Canoinhas and Mafra. In some respects, the research region is directly polarised by Jaraguá do Sul and a group of cities that, in turn, are polarising or exert influence on others, such as Mafra and Canoinhas, and in other respects, Rio Negrinho.
