Abstract

For 40 years numerous management models have been implemented with little or no effectiveness in the Brazilian metropolitan regions. What motivates this ineffectiveness and how to overcome such failure? Simultaneously, new urban-metropolitan agglomerations and urban-regional spatial arrangements began to emerge in the Brazilian territory, representing an advanced stage of metropolization, which is causing a true metamorphosis in the intra and extra-urban space. With empirical results of typologies constructed to identify new spatial configurations and research on institutional arrangements of metropolitan management, this approach confirms theoretical assumptions and announced trends. So it also seeks to contribute to the reflection on the interinstitutional and interdisciplinary challenges to the governance of multi-scalar space units, which are hybrid in their nature and increasingly extensive and not delimitable.
