Abstract

This study sought to verify the educational profile of the Brazilian municipalities in the years 2000/2010 and their respective levels of educational development. For this purpose it tried to: a) develop an educational index for the municipalities of the Brazilian Northern region; b) verify the dynamics of the index developed in the years 2000 and 2010 and; c) identify groups of municipalities with similar characteristics on education. As methodological resource we used factor analysis and cluster analysis based on a set of 11 indicators. The results showed that 263 of the 449 municipalities in the region are below average in educational development in 2010, and that only 184 municipalities had a significant increase in IDEM from 2000 to 2010 – 40.98% of the total. Other results highlighted that there was a greater homogenization on the degree of educational development of municipalities from 2000 to 2010, and that people without literacy were the ones that had the most negative impact on the educational development of the municipalities in the Northern Brazilian region..
