Abstract

Aratu is a small reddish color crustacean that lives in mangrove swamps and is incorporated into the cuisine of Northeastern Brazil. This work aimed to examine information and features that could demonstrate the potential of the aratu produced in Santa Luzia do Itanhy for the geographical indication registry. In Brazil geographical indication is regulated by the Law N. 9279/1996. It is one of the few legal instruments in the country capable of protecting traditional knowledge, adding value to products arising from it and contributing to sustainable rural development. The field research focused on aratu fishing in the Rua da Palha village, located in the countryside of Santa Luzia do Itanhy, in the Brazilian State of Sergipe. This activity is carried out mainly by women, who have been performing it for generations through traditional knowledge and practices acquired through inheritance. Although this work concludes that the aratu has potential for geographical indication registry, we also identified difficulties for its viability that can only be overcome through government support.
