Abstract

This study aimed to address social technologies in the Brazilian Semi-Arid region as instruments of regional development, a process that is considered multidimensional and multi-scalar. Among the most widespread social technologies are first and second water cisterns, greywater reuse, and biodigesters. They have contributed to the population’s quality of life and sustainability. It also sought to examine the relationship between these social technologies and the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda: health and well-being, clean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy, sustainable cities and communities, and responsible consumption and production. The results indicate that, despite having contributed to improving quality of life and preserving natural resources, mainly in light of the mobilisation of organised civil society, but also of the State, promoting regional development, there are few interfaces between these social technologies and the global scale and its governance.
