Abstract

The consequences of COVID-19 have posed a strong threat to the population’s Food and Nutrition Security, especially in vulnerable groups, adding to other challenges that already exist in Brazil. The aim of this article is to present the main determinants and causes that have led to the worsening of Food and Nutrition Insecurity during the COVID-19 pandemic in the country. A narrative literature review was carried out through a bibliographic search of articles in Portuguese and English, from November 2021 to February 2022, in order to portray the main determinants of Food and Nutrition Insecurity and its impacts on the population during the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil. Among the main results, we highlight the increase in unemployment rates, the rise in food prices, school dropouts, the loss of emergency aid and also changes in the structuring of Income Transfer Programmes. This work highlights the effects of the pandemic in Brazil and the increase in levels of Food and Nutritional Insecurity among the population, especially among the most socio-economically vulnerable sectors, and it is up to managers both to rescue the fight against poverty and hunger and to defend the human right to adequate food.
