Abstract

The poetic and pictorial relationships between literature and painting in The Little Match-Seller (1845) by Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875) and the painting The Washerwoman (1863) by Honoré-Victorien Daumier (1808-1879) are provided. The interpretation of the two artistic forms reveals in words and in pictures the indicating and intentional symbols that provoke, through hearing and seeing, a singular and indivisible movement of understanding. This fact favors and opens up horizons so that multiple readings and dialectic reflections of artistic creation may go beyond their historical periods.
