Abstract

The main purpose of this article is to identify the characteristics that influence the development of Paraná’s municipalities and to rank them according to their level of potential. To this end, factor analysis (with the principal component method) was used as data processing tool. The variables that influence the development potential of municipalities were classified into three factors: (a) infrastructure, health, education and municipal revenue; (b) agriculture and livestock; (c) transport. The municipalities in the state of Paraná that exhibited the greatest development potential were the centres of their respective regions. It should be noted that Curitiba, São José dos Pinhais and Maringá were the Paraná municipalities with the highest weighted factors. When looking at the “agriculture” factor in isolation, the municipality that stood out the most was Castro.
