Abstract

The constructive process of urban expansion, when against delicate natural environment, promotes or intensifies risky and hazardous situations to the whole urban area, which includes society, public and private assets. This article reflects on the current situation of the slope occupation in Planalto dos Guimarães, city of Primavera do Leste, focusing on the neighborhoods Parque Castelândia, Parque Gnoato and Distrito Industrial. The research based itself on the hypothesis of the direct relation between population growth – from data analysis of the most recent demographic census (2010) – and urbanization progress toward the escarpment, a propitious area to erosive processes and mass movements, using satellite images and field trips. Ultimately, the conclusion was that the population growth of the last two decades on the environment-protected areas conditioned the formation of a Risky Urbanization, especially connected to the declivity and water flow dynamics.
