Abstract

This study addresses the conceptual aspects of employment and unemployment in Brazil and the state Goiás, as theoretical support for understanding the phenomenon on the offer and search of jobs by young people in the metropolitan region of Goiânia (GO). The importance of this research is justified by the fact that unemployment is a major problem in the contemporary world, particularly in Brazil, which has been facing a mismatch between population growth and the supply and demand of employment. The article discusses the socio-cultural universe of unemployed youth, seeking to examine how the different dimensions of family and school life interfere with their performance, encouraging or hindering their inclusion in the workplace. It also evaluates the relation between the highest labor supply of unskilled work, low education rate among young people who are seeking employment and workers' skills required by entrepreneurs. It starts with reference anchored in Bourdieu, Enguita and Mannheim, as well as resorting to government officials. The data are based on empirical research with young people and entrepreneurs in the metropolitan area of Goiânia.
