Abstract

This article analyses the relationship between internal migration and development in Brazil based on the experience of migrants from the Northeast in different contexts within the country. In particular, it examines how theoretical perspectives on migration can provide a better understanding of internal migration and its impact on economic development. It also discusses the challenges faced by internal migrants, including cultural barriers and discrimination, with an emphasis on inclusive policies that aim to promote more equitable development and social integration. The results show that internal migration in Brazil reflects regional inequalities, has economic motivations, and impacts the labour market; but they also show that it is linked to structural, demographic, and cultural issues. While remittances and other positive aspects of migration can contribute to development and the equitable distribution of the population and workforce, xenophobia and discrimination present challenges.
