Abstract

The purpose of the research that gave rise to this article was to analyse how the approaches taken by Icomi Notícias, a magazine published in the 1960s by Indústria e Comércio de Minérios (Icomi), constructed narratives about health in two mining villages in the Brazilian Amazon. Documentary and qualitative in its nature, the research adopts a critical perspective when analysing the magazine’s issues, considering them not only as sources of information, but as vehicles of performative and functional language. Distributed in mining villages, the magazine positions manganese as the protagonist, while topics such as health and education are highlighted as pillars of regional progress. The analysis demonstrates how the magazine mobilises a variety of rhetorical strategies to legitimise and lend credibility to its approaches to health. The magazine’s role as an influential medium in the construction of discourses on health and progress in the Amazon region is highlighted, reflecting on the dynamics of power and knowledge of the period in question.
