Abstract

Metropolitan areas are centres of development and economic growth with significant concentrations of population, industry and services. This agglomeration of activities presents unique challenges for managers and governors, especially when it comes to standardising actions and policies in a complex region. The phenomenon of the metropolis represents one of the most prominent and complex aspects of urban development. As cities grow and expand, forming large metropolitan regions, there is a need to understand and address the territorial and social dynamics that permeate these areas. Thus, regionalisation within the context of the metropolis plays a crucial role in the organisation and management of these regions, as well as in the search for solutions to the challenges that arise there. This article will discuss the challenges faced in the search for standardisation in metropolitan areas and its implications for urban development, as well as exploring the phenomenon of regionalisation within the context of the metropolis, a response to the complexity and diversity intrinsic to large cities through a detailed literature review.
