Abstract

This research aims to bring reflections on the Geographical Indications of Services that would be able to promote the dimensions of sustainability. In this sense, the study aimed to identify whether the Geographical Indications are in harmony with the dimensions of sustainability proposed by Sachs (1993), that is, social, economic, ecological, spatial and cultural sustainability. The problem that guides the research can be summarized in the following question: to what extent can the Institute of Geographical Indication, especially Service, be recognized as a common vector for promoting the dimensions of sustainability? As a possible hypothesis, based on the data collected from a set of research carried out on the institutes of Geographical Indications, it becomes possible to perceive that GIs can be effective tools as a way of promoting the five dimensions of sustainability proposed by Sachs (1993). ). The statement is due to the fact that the constitution of a Geographical Indication stems from the defining natural attributes of certain geographic boundaries, as well as, it has factors that seek human development, whether with regard to social, economic, ecological, spatial and cultural issues. In order to achieve sustainable development, it is necessary to observe this phenomenon far beyond the strict mercantile logic, as the social aspects of local identity, historical roots, type of production and service provision must be considered, which can contribute to growth and humanitarian development. In addition, with modernity, new professional activities have been gaining prominence, especially with regard to the provision of services. Sachs (2008, p. 93), perceives the service society as a strategic opportunity for sustainable development for countries that seek a social democratic society. It is in this perspective that the Geographical Indication of Service stands out. Within a service society, which in theory, has little impact on natural resources, and high capacity for participatory and solidary development, Service GIs enable local, regional and national development to be recognized, as well as create opportunities for the actors involved can perform a new sustainable activity. In this sense, the study aimed to find out whether the Institutes of Geographical Indications, especially the Service, could be recognized as common vectors for promoting the dimensions of sustainability proposed by Sachs (1993). To achieve this objective, three chapters were developed according to each specific objective, that is, the first intended to develop the conceptualization and historicity of Geographical Indication species in Brazil, while in the second chapter, the intention was to investigate the compatibility of the five dimensions of Sachs sustainability with Geographical Indications, and finally, in the third chapter, it was concluded that the Geographical Indication of Service can be considered a tool capable of promoting the five dimensions of sustainability. The research method used was the hypothetical-deductive, through the use of bibliographic and documental research technique.
