Abstract

The article describes economic performance of the Santa Catarina (SC) State companies listed in the Industry Classification of BOVESPA, in the period from 2000 to 2003, considering their profitability and growth potential compared to other Brazilian companies listed there. With the objective of discovering whether statistically relevant differences exist in the profitability and in the growth potential of the SC companies, the study has used the Growth Potential Model to assess their growth potential in relation to companies from other States contained in the BOVESPA Classification from 2000 to 2003. As methodology, Student’s t-Test has been applied to the averages of the two researched groups of companies. The study has concluded that there are no relevant differences in the behavior of the profitability of those companies in the period under examination, therefore the null hypothesis has been accepted. Keywords: Economic performance. Profitability. Growth potential.
