Abstract

The present study investigates the use and occupation of the waterfront of channel of Barra da Lagoa channel waterfront (Island of Santa Catarina, Brazil), according to the views of local actors. The goal of this paper is to provide support for conflict management of this area, considering the knowledge of people who use and enjoy it. The methodological procedures involved open and structured interviews with actors of the local community. According to them there is dissatisfaction regarding the privatization of the channel’s surroundings, to the discredit of the performance of governmental bodies and the lack of knowledge of legal instruments. This research contributes to the environmental management of coastal ecosystems as it demonstrates the local community’s perception and evidences the necessity of an integrated management for the waterfront area.
