Abstract

This article aims to look at how the mechanisms for institutionalising quality labels for products with geographical indications work and how their commercial relationships are established, both in the domestic and international markets. In addition, it seeks to assess the processes of creating technical barriers, verifying their institutional impacts on international trade. The methodology developed throughout the article involves bibliographic research and theoretical review, covering the main studies on the subject. The results identified demonstrate that geographical indications provide distinction in products, since they follow unique production processes, culminating in a different niche of products. In addition, they contribute to regional development in Brazil, with technical barriers gradually becoming institutionalised in commercial relations, promoting transformations in institutions and market interactions.
